Riccarton Bush

We went on a class trip to riccarton bush we were finding the English names for trees and writing it on a sheet that we were given. I took this photo of this tree because I have never seen a tree with roots like this. When I was in riccarton bush I felt relaxed and happy.

Reflection of speech

The parts of my speech I enjoyed were the introduction and the conclusion. I liked the introduction because I thought it would tell you about my speech and in my opinion it did. I liked the conclusion because I thought it closed the speech well. Some challenges I came across while writing my speech were the examples, I had trouble with the examples. I overcame my challenges by changing the order of my paragraphs to make my speech make more sense so you could understand it. Overall I feel very happy about the way my speech was written because I put lots of time and effort into making my speech interesting.

As I practiced reading my speech out loud I practiced making eye- contact with the audience. I think when I presented my speech to the class I did the following things well - making eye contact and saying it with a clear voice. I was challenged with using movements to help tell the story. I overcame my challenge by having a big think about my movements. Overall I am very proud of my presentation because I think that I spoke clearly and made eye contact with my audience.

Rubbish is everywhere

Have you ever noticed how much rubbish is in the school?  Rubbish on the ground, under classrooms and even just beside the bin, it's ridiculous! So I thought to myself how could I change this?

Firstly I could put sirens in the ground so if you dropped rubbish it would  go crazy ... but that would cost too much money.   How about  I become a superhero and fly around telling everyone to pick up their rubbish they just dropped?…. but I was dreaming with this one. What if everyone picked up their rubbish?  There would be a lot less rubbish lying around.  You could actually bother to put your rubbish in the bin.

I'm feeling really frustrated. The other day at school I saw three muesli bar wrappers and four chip packets floating round in the wind. The chips were ready salted, they looked yummy.

When you are playing on the playground put your rubbish in the bin. One lunchtime when I was 5  years old I was walking around like I owned the place.  I saw a big kid drop some rubbish on the ground so I thought it was ok, that’s what you do at school until … I pulled my pockets inside out and out came all my rubbish. The duty teacher said “What are you thinking?” So that didn't go well.

Did you know when you drop rubbish you are wrecking the environment? It blocks drains and can kill animals. Plastic bags take between 500-1000 years to disappear so letting that one plastic bag float away in the air is not cool at all.  Just because you can’t see it doesn't mean it's gone. So pick up your rubbish, you should feel guilty if you don’t.

I just wish everyone would pick up their rubbish because we would like a tidy school. So If we pick up our rubbish it won't just make the  school a better place, it will make the world a better place. Not as many animals will die from rubbish, it won't  block drains, and will make the entire world far tidier.

Waking up

I was sleeping peacefully under my blanket when suddenly there it goes my alarm. All I wanted to do was press snooze but today that was not an option. Sitting up my blanket tumbled onto the floor. I stood up, shivering in my room, crept to my window and pulled up the blind, in burst the sun. I stood there with eyes blinded by the light.

Sprinting down the hallway in my school uniform, out to the kitchen I poured my milk into my bowl while thinking about school. Sitting down to eat I softly chatted to my mum. Then she said “Are you ready to go?”

I went to the laundry to get my school bag and sprinted around packing my bag. In the bathroom I brushed my teeth, standing there half asleep doing my hair. After putting on my shoes and doing up my shoelaces I was ready to go. I walked to the garage, grabbed my scooter and headed off to school.

Stereotyping

Stereotyping is mean and sometimes racist. Stereotyping is when you believe, think or say a group of people have one thing in common and are exactly the same. Stereotyping can offend people which deep down inside will hurt them forever.

Here are some examples of stereotyping:
Girls like pink and dolls. I disagree because I find some dolls creepy but some aren't. My favourite colours are green and blue, girls can like any colours they like and can like dolls if they want to.

My second example is boys like black and blue.  I disagree because boys can like whatever colour they want, some boys like blue and black but they can choose their favourite colour.

My last example is only old people do aqua jogging. I disagree because anyone can do aqua jogging but you sometimes see more adults doing it.

Stereotyping is unfair. Anyone can do, like and be whatever they want,
it is their choice.

Never judge a book by its cover.

Camp moments

Outside, tree, ladder, children wait excitedly under the shade of the tree with the sun shining, shimmering and burning our skin under the tree.

In the forest, leaves, branches, trees sway on a hilltop while birds chirp, argue and fly in the trees.

At the hot pools, water, rings, water slides lie waiting for people to have fun on them in the sun while children splash, play and jump in the warm water.

In the bunk room, backpacks, ladders, suitcases lie
around the beds and children sleep, relax and tidy up in their the own space.

Soundscape learning reflection

This term I created a soundscape to go with my poetic memoir.  This soundscape is to show the emotions I feel in this place with my special people. I used garageband to create it.

I learnt to create music (soundscape) using musical elements like rhythm, dynamic tempo, pitch, beat and timbre (type of sound).  I learnt to change the musical elements on GarageBand to change the mood.

My next step is to seek feedback on how to improve the soundscapes I create linked to mood and emotion and the elements of music.

This is my soundscape: https://soundcloud.com/waimairisounds/poetic-memoir-7

Where does my heart lie

Where the sand sleeps as I sprint along it.
Where the water creeps towards me.
Where the hills jump up and down like kids on a trampoline.
Where seagulls dance at my toes.
Where wind blows heavily in my face like a sprinter after a race.

Memoir of a special place

The town was usual enough; it had
A lake, a park, a pontoon, a rock
To Jump off, and even a bike trail around the lake
I don't normally use. My family, grandparents and I
Did what families do - water skiing, swimming,
Boating, fishing and biking.
Doing nothing important.

The story behind my name

Hi my name is Kate and I am going to tell the story of my name.  My mum and dad choose my name together.  The reason they choose Kate for my name is because it was a name they had all ways liked.  Alice is  my middle name.  Alice was my great grandma’s middle name.

If I was a boy I would have been called Jed.  My family call me Katiepie but we don't know how I got that nickname. Something else I learned is that I have a baby cousin called Jed and a baby cousin whose middle name is also Alice.
